Key Points

  • Tesla and SpaceX will begin building Terafab in Grimes County, Texas
  • The companies plan an initial $16.8 billion investment
  • The factory is designed to produce chips for AI, robots, robotaxis and space-based data centers

Musk’s chip factory is headed to Texas

Tesla and SpaceX said Thursday that Terafab, the advanced semiconductor factory they are developing together, will be built in Grimes County, Texas, outside Houston.

The companies said they will make an initial investment of $16.8 billion in the project.

Elon Musk, CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, called the planned facility “the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far.” SpaceX said more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space is planned.

The companies expect the facility to employ at least 3,000 people from Grimes County and nearby Brazos County.

Terafab is being built for AI-scale compute

SpaceX described Terafab as an advanced semiconductor fab designed to close the gap between current chip supply and future compute demand.

The facility is expected to include manufacturing, packaging and testing for advanced logic and memory chips in one location.

The goal is speed. By keeping more of the process inside one vertically integrated factory, Tesla and SpaceX say they can accelerate chip development and deployment.

The chips are expected to support:

  • Tesla Optimus robots
  • Self-driving Cybercabs
  • Edge computing and AI inference
  • SpaceX’s planned space-based data centers
  • High-power AI compute systems

The project fits Musk’s broader AI plan

Terafab sits inside a much larger vision from Musk.

Tesla is pushing deeper into humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles. SpaceX is moving toward AI infrastructure, including data centers and compute capacity tied to satellites.

Both strategies need enormous chip supply.

SpaceX has suggested in filings that total spending on Terafab could reach as much as $119 billion across a multi-phase construction plan. The company did not discuss the project on its first public earnings call earlier this week.

Intel has said it will contribute to the Terafab project, though details on its role remain limited.

Water and local incentives are already under scrutiny

SpaceX said Terafab will use water from the local Gibbons Creek Reservoir instead of local groundwater.

That detail follows concerns from residents in Grimes County, where hundreds attended a county meeting Wednesday. Residents raised questions about tax breaks awarded to the project and the level of transparency around the agreement.

The Texas Governor’s office released a statement from Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sarah Borowicz, who said the agreement could strengthen the district and expand opportunities for students.

The local debate is likely to continue as the project moves from announcement to construction.

Terafab turns chip supply into a Tesla-SpaceX priority

The announcement shows how central chip access has become to Tesla and SpaceX.

Terafab is not being presented as a standard factory expansion. It is being framed as a dedicated compute platform for Musk’s next group of businesses: robots, autonomous fleets, AI inference and space-based data centers.

The first number is already large: $16.8 billion to start. The larger number, if the multi-phase buildout reaches SpaceX’s filing estimate, could put Terafab among the most expensive industrial projects in the world.
