Akamai Lands $11.6 Billion Anthropic AI Cloud Deal

Key Points

  • Akamai shares surged as much as 20% after hours after announcing a seven-year, $11.6 billion agreement with Anthropic
  • The contract pushes Akamai much deeper into AI infrastructure, adding to more than $2.8 billion of cloud commitments announced earlier this year
  • Akamai expects about $5.5 billion of capital spending tied to the deal, making execution and infrastructure returns the next major test

Akamai just landed the kind of contract that can change a company’s story

Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM) has spent years being known primarily for content delivery and cybersecurity. A new deal with Anthropic could force the market to look at the company differently.

Anthropic has committed to purchase $11.6 billion of Akamai Cloud services over seven years, using the company’s distributed infrastructure to support CPU-heavy AI workloads. Akamai shares jumped as much as 20% in after-hours trading following the announcement.

The size matters on its own, but the momentum around Akamai Cloud matters even more. The company had already announced more than $2.8 billion of multi-year Cloud Infrastructure Services commitments earlier this year. With Anthropic added, Akamai now has more than $14 billion of announced multi-year cloud commitments across those agreements.

This is starting to look less like Akamai experimenting with AI infrastructure and more like a serious attempt to become another large-scale provider behind the AI buildout.

Anthropic is paying for infrastructure, but Akamai has to build it

The contract comes with a substantial investment requirement.

Akamai estimates approximately $5.5 billion of capital expenditures will be associated with the $11.6 billion commitment. Around $1.7 billion of additional capex is expected in 2026 as the company begins securing memory and other critical infrastructure components.

The spending explains why the deal does not change Akamai’s 2026 revenue guidance. The economics unfold over seven years as capacity comes online and Anthropic’s workloads move onto the platform.

There is also room for the relationship to become considerably larger. Anthropic can expand its commitment by another $9 billion, which would take the potential relationship above $20 billion over the term.

The warrant structure gives Anthropic an incentive to do exactly that:

  • The warrant represents up to 7.7 million Akamai shares, or roughly 5% of outstanding common stock on an as-converted basis
  • About 2% is expected to vest alongside the initial $11.6 billion commitment
  • The remaining roughly 3% vests as Anthropic purchases up to an additional $9 billion of services
  • Each additional $3 billion of cloud spending unlocks approximately another 1%

Anthropic benefits if Akamai succeeds, while Akamai gains one of the most important AI companies in the world as a major long-term customer.

AI infrastructure is becoming a much broader market

The first phase of the AI boom concentrated enormous value in GPUs and hyperscale cloud providers. The next phase is spreading into memory, networking, power, data centers and alternative compute platforms capable of handling different types of workloads.

Anthropic choosing Akamai for CPU infrastructure is a good example.

Not every AI task needs the most expensive GPU available. Training and inference may dominate attention, but AI companies also run enormous amounts of conventional computing around their models. If Akamai can provide that capacity efficiently across its distributed cloud network, it has a legitimate opening inside a market that has mostly been associated with Amazon, Microsoft and Google.

The contract still has to produce attractive returns on billions of dollars of new investment. That will be the number worth watching as the infrastructure comes online.

For now, though, Akamai has landed a customer and commitment large enough to change how the market thinks about its cloud business.

Akamai was already selling cloud infrastructure. Anthropic may have just turned it into an AI infrastructure story.
